Title: Specialist Domestic Abuse Counsellor /Therapeutic Practitioner
Location: Middlesbrough and other MSP Counselling and Therapeutic projects
Employment Terms: 1 x Part time 3 Day Post (22.5hrs)
Salary: £15,495 actual salary (Scale 6 -SCP19)
Contract: 1 Year Fixed Term Contract (renewal subject to funding)
Holidays: 26 Days, plus Bank Holidays (pro rata)
Reporting To: Counselling and Therapeutic Services Manager
Based in central Middlesbrough, we are seeking a Specialist Domestic Abuse Counsellor / Therapeutic Practitioner to join this dynamic team. Our holistic approach requires high performing individuals with excellent people skills, and a resilient personality to deal with some difficult issues with a strong client focus. Clear adherence to confidentiality and Safeguarding is essential.

Applicants will be able to provide a range of one to one evidence-based psychological interventions within MSP’s Trauma Informed TIME model and within its current therapeutic framework and able to work from an integrative perspective incorporating humanistic, psychodynamic, psychoeducational, CBT and trauma specific approaches into their work to meet the needs of the client group and clients groups associated with MSP projects and be able to facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic group work as and when required. The post will be primarily based within our Calling Time Project working with those who acknowledge they have used abusive behaviours within intimate relationships.
Successful applicants will be qualified have an in-depth knowledge and training in a recognized psychological model/s. Have significant experience of working with domestic abuse, within a therapeutic environment, with complex trauma-based presentations and have post qualification experience.
Experience of working with brief, mid and long term interventions would be required to meet the needs of MSP clients and MSP Projects in addition to skills needed to work therapeutically on online platforms and the therapeutic provision and developmental needs within the service.
Applicants should be accredited, or working towards accreditation and registered with an appropriate professional body.
This position may require flexible working hours to meet the demands of the service and there is a requirement to be available to work across other MSP therapeutic projects as and when required including administration and organisational support around the delivery of all counselling and therapeutic services.
Training/Knowledge/Skills
- Training to a minimum of Diploma/Degree level.
- Have training in and possess knowledge of domestic violence and abuse and impacts on the client group.
- Have training in or possess a good theoretical understanding across a range of approaches including humanistic, psychodynamic, CBT, Feminist and attachment based theories and an understanding of trauma focussed therapy and treatment approaches which form part of the organisations integrative therapeutic framework.
- Understand effects of trauma on survivors of domestic violence with particular reference to PTSD and anxiety based disorders.
- To have an understanding of Trauma informed practice and to work from a trauma informed perspective at all times.
- Training and knowledge of safeguarding policies.
- Demonstrate good therapeutic assessment and risk assessment skills.
- Have good formulation skills in order to implement appropriate structured and collaborative interventions.
- Be able to work with brief, intermediate and long term therapy.
- Work within the organisations therapeutic timeframes.
- Implement a range of assessment protocols.
- Work within the CORE (Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation) System.
- Possess the ability to establish and manage the therapeutic relationship individually and within a group setting.
- Be able to demonstrate good levels of self-care.
- To engage fully in organisations supervision process and assessments.
- Access the appropriate ratio of supervision in line with caseload and BACP guidelines regarding registration and/or accreditation.
- Possess good IT skills.
- Manage a proportionate caseload effectively.
- Maintain client confidentiality at all times.
- Ability to liaise effectively with referrers.
- Ability to offer advice and support to MSP support staff on mental health issues and discuss appropriateness of referrals in relation to clients being supported in other areas of the service.

- Possess a methodical approach and accuracy in record keeping in line with organisations policies and procedures.
- Possess good administration and organisational skills.
- Keep internal systems updated.
- Compile statistical data as and when required.
- Work within the organisations and the Counselling Service Policies and Procedures.
- Contribute to the counselling service development work and assist in the promotion of the service.
- Provide support to the Counselling and Therapeutic Services Manager as and when required.
- Attend internal and external meetings as and when required.
