We are here to support, promote and develop voluntary and community action in Middlesbrough

Trustees Week

Trustees’ Week 6-10 November 2023

Trustees’ Week is a time for us to come together to celebrate the achievements of nearly one million trustees across the UK. We thank them for the time, commitment and effort you bring to your charities to help them thrive. We also use it as a chance to encourage people to consider becoming a trustee and learn what's involved in this vital and rewarding role.

Throughout Trustees’ Week here in Middlesbrough we're celebrating with:

  • Events: 'Ever wondered what trustees do?' 8th & 15th November, both 1-3pm at MVDA offices
  • Sharing local current trustee vacancies
  • Showcasing inspiring stories of charity trustees across Tees Valley

What is a Trustee?

Trustees are unpaid volunteers who ensure that a charity complies with charity law and that it is well-run, in good financial shape and delivering its charitable objectives to the best of its ability.

There is a misconception that to be a trustee you must have the ‘right’ experience and should wait to be invited to take on a role or reach a certain maturity in age or career level. Whilst financial, legal and management skills are invaluable to a Board, other skills and experiences, relevant to people of all demographics, are sought after too. For example, only 0.5% of trustees are aged 18-24 years old, despite a growing need for expertise in areas such as social media, crowdfunding and how to engage with younger beneficiaries.

The trustee’s role is to provide checks, balances and oversight of the organisation’s performance, ethics, finances and risks. Trustees need to have a basic understanding of the role of charity in society, but no specific experience is needed. Enthusiasm and a proactive approach are far more important so whatever your background, there is sure to be a trustee role to suit you.
