We are here to support, promote and develop voluntary and community action in Middlesbrough

News round-up from MVDA networks

Middlesbrough Children’s Services Recovery Group

Coronavirus has had a huge impact on all of our services. For many services, the implementation of lockdown resulted in a dip in service demand, now with lockdown easing some services demand levels are returning to normal.

To help support the forward planning of the Middlesbrough Prevention Board and the work of the Middlesbrough Children’s Services Recovery Group we are asking key partners to complete this quick survey below before the 24th June;

Please find the link to your survey here - https://arcg.is/0afKeT

If you have any queries about the survey, please just give Rebecca a call.

Free physical activity for older adults booklet

Public Health England has made the attached booklet regarding physical activity for older adults during the pandemic available as a download and printed resource.

We are asking for your help to promote this excellent resource to local older people:

  • We have 5,000 printed copies of the booklet on order – can you offer a route for distributing these to relevant populations in South Tees in fairly large numbers (i.e. we can’t be posting out copies to single households)? If so, please email Imran_Naeem@middlesbrough.gov.uk
  • Do you have any social media channels to share the digital version? Assets are provided as links below.

Printed copies are also being distributed within 250,000 shielding boxes by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs to people defined as extremely vulnerable on medical grounds.

Psychological First Aid training

Public Health England has launched an updated Psychological First Aid (PFA) digital training module, aimed at all frontline and essential workers and volunteers.

The course aims to increase awareness and confidence to provide psychosocial support to people affected by COVID-19.  PFA is a globally recognised training in emergency situations and PHE have developed this new course as part of their national incident response, and in partnership with NHS England, Health Education England, FutureLearn and E-Learning for Health.

The course is free, and no previous qualifications are required. It takes around 90 minutes to complete and is also available in three sessions for the learner to complete at their own pace. By the end of the course, outcomes will include: understanding how emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic can affect us, recognising people who may be at increased risk of distress and understanding how to offer practical and emotional support.

As well as considering how the training could be used within your own organisation, we would be grateful if you could promote the launch of the training via your channels.

If you have any questions about this activity, please contact publicmentalhealth@phe.gov.uk.

ICO cookie rules, COVID-19 and what it all means

In response to the global health pandemic COVID-19, the ICO has suggested a degree of flexibility will be given to organisations around compliance of the cookie rules. They have acknowledged the current health situation with a pragmatic and empathetic response. You can read that response from the ICO here.

This will come as good news for charities and not-for-profit organisations in the short-term. Now that you can relax a little, we’ll explain why the rules are important, how cookies impact your website and users, and what you need to do.

From late April to early May, StreetGames conducted research with around 200 young people from across the StreetGames network comprising: participants, volunteers, young advisors and former volunteers. The research questions focused on giving young people a voice during the coronavirus pandemic, to learn the different ways the situation may be affecting them. This document looks to share the key findings from their feedback.
