Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC) is an independent charity that works to promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles using the ten principles of One Planet Living. We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to coordinate the development & roll out of Eco Shops, working closely with a range of partners and people with lived experience of food poverty/insecurity.
Eco Shops are pop-up social supermarkets in school and community settings providing improved access to affordable food. They aim to reduce the stigmas attached to food poverty, create opportunities for people to help ‘good to eat’ surplus food from being wasted and challenge and change the perception of surplus food, redefining what can be achieved using surplus food and to change understanding of the environmental issues around food waste.
You will also be involved in the practical day to day running of the new Tees Food Hub (FareShare surplus food redistribution hub), providing a link between the hub, community and school-based Eco Shops and MEC. You will work to strengthen the link between the hub and Eco Shops by fully understanding the aims of both initiatives, and sharing skills and knowledge regarding the possibilities of how surplus food can be used, and to promote positive health and sustainability. An important role will also be to develop new partnerships with local food businesses to create new supplies of surplus food to supply the Tees Food Hub. You will need previous experience of developing and maintaining effective partnerships with a range of partners, and of working towards achieving defined targets and outcomes. You will require excellent communication and organisational skills and a have commitment to sustainability and an asset-based approach to community development.
