What is IDAHO?
International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is held every year on May 17th, it was started in 2004 to draw attention worldwide to the discrimination that LGBT* people face locally and globally. IDAHO “is not one centralised campaign; rather it is a moment that everyone can take advantage of to take action.” If you would like to know more about IDAHO, you can check it out here.
Love Makes a Family
“The family constitutes the very first environment of any person, including members of the LGBTQI community. This is the place where values are shaped and transmitted, where security and safety is provided, and the place where self-esteem and confidence are constructed. Families, therefore, have great powers … and great responsibilities in the moral and physical wellbeing of their members.”
Every year IDAHO has a theme, this year that theme is families. The focus includes the role of families in the well-being of LGBT* members and the respect of the rights of rainbow families. For more information on this years theme click here.
What’s on at Hart Gables
This year we will be celebrating diverse families through two events. Both events are open to everyone. This event is our Love Makes a Family event, we will be celebrating diverse families with a free family friendly event through making art. There will be music, food and refreshments available. Staff and volunteers will be available to chat and answer any questions about LGBT* issues and our services. Our special guest will be Rosarts. Rosarts create family friendly ‘refreshingly original storified arts’, they create personal prints based on the story of the client. As well as their online shop, Rosarts reaches out to schools to do workshops that encourage children to embrace their art skills and create their own storified art. You can check out Rosarts here. This event will be held on the Wednesday, 17th May, 3-5pm, at the St Mary’s Centre in Middlesbrough. See poster or contact sian.parker@hartgables.org.uk for more information.
